In Luhrmann’s modern adaptation, the theme of love is
cleverly presented in the balcony scene where the two lovers present to the
audience their true feelings. Both characters have been dressed in contextually
clever costumes that exacerbate their emotions and their specific roles in the
embryonic relationship. Romeo is dressed as a knight, symbolising his
chivalrous role as he sweeps in to save Juliet from the loveless marriage to
Paris. Juliet is dressed as an angel, symbolising her youth and purity. As the
pair meet in the pool, they fall in and Luhrmann has cleverly used the motif of
the water to cleanse them not only of their past relationships but also to
reiterate the notion of purity in their new love. This notion is furthered as
neither character wears make-up, underscoring their age and how they are laying
bare their emotions for the other to see. As the camera zooms in on their
faces, we see complete joy in both their eyes and the close-up continues this
and the audience not only sees their love plainly, but also enjoys their fun
and frivolity; a careless love that is new, tempestuous and exciting.

In Luhrmann’s modern interpretation of the Balcony scene he utilises subtle film techniques in order to convey the two lovers feelings towards each other. Luhrmann creates a visual representation of both lovers personality and attitude towards each other. Romeo is dressed in a costume to simulate a ‘knight in shining armour’ symbolising his typical chivalrous attitude towards his relationship with Juliet. While Juliet is clothed as an angel in pure white, this subconsciously produces an image of her purity and innocence this is complemented by Luhrmann’s selection of a younger actor to play Juliet. After the pair have met Luhrmann has the two fall into a pool together signifying their purging of any dividing factors (for Romeo this purging factor is of Rosaline and for Juliet it’s Paris.) Close-up camera angles further the theme of love in this scene as it depicts their complete joy and pure love for the other. Luhrmann places soft lights all around the pool to brightly illuminate the two lovers and the surrounding area. The light around Romeo and Juliet heavily contrasts to the darkness of the night around them as though their love has brightened up the night.

ReplyDeleteThroughout luhrmanns alteration of Romeo and Juliet, the theme of love is vastly projected throughout the balcony scene. As the two star crossed lovers express their feelings towards the audience. Both Romeo and Juliet were clothed in their own iconic uniforms, which helped express their roles in the relationship they were currently in. It also elaborates their true emotions, as well as their responsibilities in the relationship. Romeo is dressed up as a knight, which symbolises his role as a hero in the relationship by intervening before Juliet is forced to marry Paris. Juliet is presented as an angel, which is in fact a symbol of her cleanliness as well as her age. Luhrmann also produces the couple as lovesick puppies stuck in-between the controversy of their feuding families, which proves to be an obstacle for their love to flourish. During the balcony scene, when they accompany each other in the pool, they enter in and appear above with each other to symbolise new love and that the problems with Juliet’s old love Paris and with Romeos problems with the feuding families all obliterate and their new love is left to flourish. As Lurhmann switches between camera angles from a full overview of their surroundings to a close up on Romeo and Juliet’s face, their faces look undeveloped which gives the audience a understanding in that they are young of age. Seen from the expression on their face we are given a brief outline on their unforsaken and unending love.
In Luhrmann’s version of Romeo and Juliet (originally written by William Shakespeare) has a vast amount of various film, language and costume techniques that make this movie standout to viewers. The balcony scene could be one of the most descriptive scenes in the whole movie. For example the costumes that Romeo is wearing is a knight in amour this shows that he is a character that wants to rescue Juliet from praises inevitable marriage. This is furthermore in depth because Juliet’s costume is an angle; this is showing the pristine purity of her. The film techniques
ReplyDeleteThat are used are excessive, each one telling the viewer a different thing about the two “star crossed lovers”. Close up of the two make it feel like you are really there observing the interaction between the two. A low camera angle is used for Romeo looking at Juliet and a high camera angle for Juliet looking at Romeo. When they get close and fall into the pool you get close ups of their faces, you can clearly see from their facial expressions that love is in the air between them. By using these techniques lurmanns has obviously been able to captivate the viewer and engage him in this scene
In Luhrmann’s interpretation of Romeo and Juliet, he had presented the theme love to the modern audience fully in the balcony scene as the two star-crossed lovers present their true feelings through visual representation and other film techniques. Both characters were dressed cleverly that presents their purpose and roles in life as well as foreshadowing their relationship. Romeo is dressed in a costume as a dark knight with reflective armour, like the proverbial ‘knight in shining armour’, almost as if Romeo is rescuing Juliet from her inevitable marriage to Paris. While Juliet was wearing as an angelic figure, although she took off her wings but her simple make-up and straight hair subconsciously creates a picture of Juliet as a pure, innocent and apathy young woman. After each character finished their soliloquy, they both fell into the pool. Their costumes is a contrast of black and white, this represents they are from different sides of the spectrum since they come from feuding families. As the water symbolizes cleanliness and serene, it provides the image of reborn as all the stopping factors has been wiped away. Close-up camera angles develops more of the theme of love as audiences are able to feel their complete joy and love for one another. Also the lighting around the characters creates a romantic atmosphere as the moonlight represents romance whilst the darkness frames the forbidden love of the relationship
ReplyDeleteIn Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet, Luhrmann presents the theme of Love very clearly throughout the film, but shows it very well especially in the meeting of Romeo & Juliet and in the Balcony scene. As we first see, Luhrmann has dressed Romeo up as a Knight in Shining Armor and Juliet as an Angel. The dialogue that is used in both of the scenes are filled with emotions, when Juliet asks Romeo how he got over the walls he responds with “With love’s light wings did I o'erperch these walls”. This tells the reader that Romeo is in deep love because Juliet replies with “If they do see thee they will murder thee.” Romeo feels that even though there is a posibility of that happening, he still wants to talk and spend time with the one he loves. The costume and make-up is a sign that these two are destined to be “star-crossed lovers” as Romeo is the Knight in Shining Armor and he has come to rescue Juliet who is dressed as an Angel from the war of feuding families.

DeleteThe modernized version of the classic tragedy ‘Romeo and Juliet’, Luhrmann has used the theme of love and a modern setting to involve the younger generation of the relativity it has to our life. Luhrmann has set the scene in a courtyard with a pool, dimmed lights and of course the balcony that the gorgeous Juliet stands on. Juliet is symbolized as an angel through her appearance as she is dressed in an angels attire and this tells use how pure, young and perfect she appears to Romeo as, she is Romeo’s angel. Luhrmann has cleverly used a lot of sly and under the rope techniques of symbolized, such as the pool cleansing them of the past and creating a fresh love for them both, and during the scene neither is wearing any make up – giving us a sense of purity and freshness. We as an audience get the idea that these two young lovers literally ‘dive into their love’ as they dive into the pool. When the close up of the two newly met lovers all we see is the ecstatic love-struck faces of Romeo and Juliet. Showing that they are only aware of what they see, each other as this is all the two care about.
ReplyDeleteHow about, instead of "a lot of sly and under the rope techniques", you say "subtle techniques"? Under the rope suggests they were boxing or skipping...
DeleteLove is an incredibly powerful word. When you're in love, you always want to be together, and when you're not, you're thinking about being together because you need that person and without them your life is incomplete. Baz Luhrmann presents love by using clever cinematography. He uses low angle shots and close ups to give the audience the true meaning of Shakespeare’s dialogue. Romeo is dressed as a knight which symbolises how Luhrmann portrays him as Juliet’s “knight in shining armour”. Luhrmann zooms in on Juliet wearing no makeup, a white dress which emphasises her innocence and making her look like an angel. Love is clearly represented in this scene when Romeo says “I have night’s cloak to hide me from their eyes and but thou love me, let them find me here; my life was better ended by their hate, than death prorogued, wanting of thy love”. This is showing that Romeo is willing to let the Capulet’s find him with Juliet if she doesn't love him. It gives a lasting impression how in love they are, and how they are willing to give their life up for each other. The balcony scene is where Romeo and Juliet are expressing more of their love to each other except in Luhrmann’s version Juliet doesn't talk on the balcony, it has been modernized with Juliet coming out of a lift to eventually meet Romeo and leads to the pool scene.

DeleteLuhrmann cleverly presents love in the balcony through modern interpretations of the Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet. Luhrmann’s play on Shakespeare’s biblical allusion when Romeo describes Juliet “bright angel” sees Juliet in the baloney scene dressed as an angles to represent youth and purity this is accompanied by the contextually clever of Romeo as he is dressed as a knight symbolising Romeo’s loyalty for Juliet and honourable traits. Baz Luhrmann’s extensive use of camera angles through out the balcony scene help him portray love story of the ‘star crossed lovers’. The shots of Romeo and Juliet in the pool and under water, help express the pureness of their love, as this scene is filmed through the pureness of water Luhrmann has enhanced the audience scene of love in this scene. Baz Luhrmann’s use of color in the balcony scene makes a divine place, as the many bright lights fend of the dark background and the skies are lit with thousands of stars, as this is the house of Juliet this is fitting to Romeo’s descriptions of Juliet that she lives in a place that has a divine factor.
ReplyDeleteIn Baz Luhrmann modern version of Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’ he presents clearly the theme of love in his film. In the Balcony scene Luhrmann uses film techniques and visual representation to express the theme of love.
ReplyDeleteWe first notice that Romeo is dressed as a knight symbolizing how Romeo is Juliet’s ‘knight in shinning armor’ and how he will be honorable and loyal to Juliet. Juliet is dressed as an angel representing how perfect she is to Romeo.
Through dialogue love is clearly shown as Romeo states, “with love’s light wings did I o’erperch these walls, For stony limits cannot hold love out”. This shows that nothing will stop Romeo from being with Juliet and that with there love he can surpass any obstacle.
Luhrmann has represented love in many different ways in his modern adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. In the balcony scene these two star-crossed lovers present their true feeling to the audience. Luhrmann has dressed both characters in clothes that exaggerate their feelings and roles. Juliet is dressed in white with angel wings. This shows the audience her youth, purity and angelic characteristics, this is accompanied by Romeo being dressed in a knights armor showing his loyalty, strength and honorable traits. Luhrmann’s extensive use’s of close ups and establishing shots helps to portray the love of these two characters. Luhrmann’s close ups help the audience see the love in each characters eyes. As we see more close ups we notice that Romeo and Juliet are thinking about nothing else but each other.
ReplyDeleteIn Baz Luhrmann’s modern version of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”, the theme of love is intelligently and wisely present to the audience through the balcony scene. Luhrmann uses costume/makeup and symbolism to represent the theme of love. Luhrmann costumes the character Romeo as a ‘knight in shining armour’ who saves the young girl Juliet. This is also a form of symbolism of love. Juliet is dressed as an angel, symbolising her youth and purity. The young couple fall into the Capulet’s pool. Luhrmann has the idea that when they fall into the pool, it is as if they are cleansed of their past relationships so that now the two can fall for each other. Surprisingly, no character is wearing make-up because it is a sign of youth and purity.
ReplyDeleteIn the balcony scene baz lurhmann has acknowledged Romeos desperate love for Juliet as Lurhmann presents Romeo as a knight and has come to rescue his beloved Juliet from her family the Capulet’s. Juliet has also been cleverly dressed as an angel and this contradicts there love. Lurhmann uses a variety of techniques to properly explain the strong bond of these ‘star crossed lovers’. Romeo explains to Juliet “with loves light wings did I o’preach these walls” however as an audience member we know that Romeo did not fly over the walls but merely climbs up a wooden ladder. The water scene gives the audience an idea of the purity of there love as the water is crystal clear and it lets us know that it was love at first sight.
ReplyDeleteIn the Romeo and Juliet Film by Baz Luhrmann has shown in the way of the two lovers at the balcony scene, finagling showing there feelings for each other. Romeo and Juliet is dressed to the best way to show off there characteristics and emotions as there you see in the balcony scene. As Romeo is dressed as a knight showing his strong stature, ( i think anyway) and as Juliet is wearing A angel costume which shows that she is beautiful as a angel. These two meet at the bathroom, Romeo acts like he has seen a ghost but its just thy beautiful Juliet, But she gets called away by her Mother and Maid to go see Paris, as he runs up the stairs the Maid Says "That boy is a montague, Romeo" as that she now knows that Luhrmann shows that she is not knowing what to do but she still loves him. As the party ends it comes to the balcony scene with Romeo and Juliet Meeting each other as they do this they are both talking about each other and knowing that we are thinking that they will be together and as they fall in the pool together Luhrmann expresses there love is strong, new, and exciting.
ReplyDeleteRomeo and Juliet’s balcony scene is probably the most well known scene in all of theater. Luhmann’s recreation of the famous scene is slightly different but still has the same themes and meaning. The balcony scene’s purpose was so that the audience could find out Romeo and Juliet’s feelings about the full situation. It is also where they express their love about each other. Romeo has presented the couple slightly differently than Shakespeare did when he first made it. He uses the idea of a dress up party to change the appearance of the couple. Romeo is dressed as a Knight. Luhmann dose this to symbolize the chivalrous role as he saves Juliet from an unloving marriage to Paris. Juliet is dressed as an angle. This symbolizes purity and beauty. The part where the couple fall into the pool symbolizes them cleaning and washing away their former life and lovers. The quote “O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo?” although most people think she is asking where Romeo is she is actually saying why dose he have to be Romeo. She says this because he is a Montague.
ReplyDeleteIn Baz Luhrmann’s modern alteration of Shakespeare’s classical play “ Romeo and Juliet”, the theme of love is cleverly and cunningly presented in the balcony scene were the “two star cross lovers” are presented to the audience alongside with their true and intimate feelings through the use of film techniques and visual representations. Luhrmann has cleverly symbolized Juliet as an angel representing her cleanliness and age and Romeo a knight in shining armor, who represents a hero, who saves the “damsel in distress” Juliet from her mundane future marriage to Paris. Both of the characters costumes fit nicely into the scene as Luhrmann uses the characters costumes as specific roles to enhance the audience’s understanding. As the lovers accompany each other to the poolside, they fall in. Luhrmann has used the idea of water to cleanse the two lovers past and present relationships and to start freshly a new chapter of there yet unexplored love. Camera angles have taken advantage of this scene as the young lovers new, pure love is explored using close up and zoom camera shots. We, as the audience see the complete and utter joy in both characters faces as the scene continues to blossom the lovers newly started relationship.
ReplyDeleteIn the film, Romeo and Juliet, the theme of love
ReplyDeleteis widely used. This is evident when the two ‘love struck teens’ Romeo and
Juliet. Numerous techniques are used to show this throughout the film. Costume
is used frequently in the film and is very affective. An example of the use of
costume is the balcony scene. Lehmann cleverly dresses Romeo as a knight in
armor and he has Juliet depicted as an angel. This use of costume is to add to
the two characters. Romeo’s costume sends a image to the viewers that he is a
noble, heroic character, where as they have made Juliet out to look like an innocent,
pure young girl. Another technique used by Luhrmann in the balcony scene is
lighting. lighting is extremely important because it is a night scene. Numerous
fairy lights are used through the whole balcony scene. This is to set the
romantic scene which adds a mood to the two love-struck teens.

ReplyDeleteIn the modern version of Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’ directed Baz Luhrmann, love is presented in a variety of different ways. Luhrmann uses a range of different techniques like camera angles, lighting, sound and music. Luhrmann uses small dull lights in the pool to show that the scene is a very emotional time in their lives. When Romeo and Juliet are in the pool it signifies them being cleansed from the feuding families that they were born into. The sound used changes throughout the scene from loud strings to quiet low toned sounds produced from the double bass and cello. Luhrmann gives Romeo a knight outfit and Juliet an angel outfit, the knight signifies Romeo saving Juliet from the hardships that she may face.
