So, up to (and including p.75) work with the student next to you to find examples of the following themes:

Family Love

Are there any other themes you think we should be looking at?

Do the work in your books to start, then post your finished responses on the weekend BEFORE our next lesson.

  3. Family Love:
•Lucien’s father had never talked to him properly before he became ill, but they had got on pretty well. They used to do things together like swimming, going to the match and watching tv.
•Lucien thought it had been almost worth being ill, to find this new, different dad, who talked to him and told him stories.
•“Stay close to us Arianna,” warned Tomasso, “We don`t want you going missing in this crush. Hold Angelo`s hand.” She took the hand that Angelo held out to her, brown with the sun and calloused from fishing, and squeezed it affectionately.
•“Where have you been?” Valaria(Arianna`s mother) kept asking. “We were worried sick.”
•But when her parents and brothers said goodbye, the tears gathered obstinately in her eyes.
•He even brought library books into the bedroom and read to him, because Lucien didn`t have the strength to hold a book in his hands.

    Good vs Evil
•“Look after it. Don`t show it to anyone else. There are those who would take it from you.”
•“But let that pass. It is your kind of science, which I call magic, that the di Chimici are after.”
•“If they got not only into your world but into your time,” said Rodolfo, “they would bring back all kinds of magic- cures for illnesses, spells to make inanimate objects move, mystical weapons which can kill and maim from long distances away…
•Rodolfo looked at him sadly. “If it is civilisation to kill vast numbers of people at a stroke, then yes, that is what they want.”
•The di Chimici wants to help only the di Chimici. They would steal whatever made them strong, made them live long, made their women have easy childbirth and healthy babies.
•“Because the person coming up the stairs is Rinaldo di Chimici,” he said softly. “And if he ever finds you, he will happily kill you for that book.
•Di Chimici had received information that a boy had been brought from the Scoula Mandoliera to Signor Rodolfo`s laboratory.

    Friendship:
•She dragged him back into the shadow of the belltower and started yanking off her boy clothes, unaware of the effect she was creating.
•“Quick, stop gaping like a fish and put on my boy`s clothes, over those weird one of yours. You`ve only got minutes before someone spots you and hauls you up before the Bellezzan Council.”
•“I`ll have to wait another year. And all to save the life of some half- crazed stranger.”
•‘Thanks look, I`m sorry for messing up your plan. As you said, I didn`t know. And thanks for saving me, if that`s what you`ve done.” Said Lucien
•“Quick,” he hissed. “We must get you away before they realize you`ve gone.”
•But Rodolfo was already hurrying him into the passage and grasping the peacock`s head again. “Just follow the passage,” he said to Lucien. “It will bring you to the Duchessa’s palace.

    Fate is coming

“We [Stravagantis] have become guardians of the secret of this kind of travel”
“The Di Chimici want to help only the Di Chimici. They would steal whatever made them strong, live long, made their women have easy childbirth and healthy babies.”
    Family Love:
“She knew better than anyone what turmoil her absence would have caused on Torrone. She was their Figlia dell’isola- Daughter of the Island”
“Where have you been [Arianna]? We were worried sick.”
    Friendship:
“The only young oarsman who ever meant anything to me was you, Rodolfo.”
“Any foe of the Di Chimici must be a friend of Bellezza’s. And I am Bellezza.”

    Friendship

    1. “It was so unfair. That boy, Luciano, had thwarted all her plans and coolly stepped in to take her place. She knew with a part of her mind that it had not been his fault, that he hadn’t deliberately set out to catch the Duchessa’s eye… Perhaps he wasn’t so simple after all.”

    2. “Tell Silvia I sent you.”

    3. “Look I’m sorry for messing up your plan. As you said, I didn’t know. And thanks for saving me, if that’s what you did.”

  15. Friendship:
'The only oarsman that ever meant anything to me was you' This gives us connotations that the Duchessa had a previous relationship with Rodolfo that we don't know.

Fate: "It was the oddest reading he had ever seen.' This shows that he was used to simple and uncomplicated signs for the future

    Good Vs Evil:
When Rodolfo and Luciano are initially talking about the book, he says "The Di Chimici would happily kill you for that book.
    Family:
"“She couldn’t pick her brothers from the many swaying revellers but her heart went out to them”
Even though she may have disagreed with her brothers at times, she still loved them dearly as family.
